Conversation Starters

This summer I had what I consider one of the greatest opportunities of my career thus far: working with Danielle LaPorte to create her first app, Conversation Starters. I'm a big fan of Danielle's, so it was one of those rare and exciting projects where personal and professional passion could breathe the same air.

To me, good experience design is a lot like love: give more than you ask. A successful app requires as little as possible of its user, preferably nothing, and gives back surprise and delight in unexpected quantities. To this end, we brush away the distraction of settings, gratuitous navigation, form fields and decision points until all we’re left with is value, a gift to the user unadulterated and minimally adorned.

Applying these principles in the UX of Conversation Starters was easy because the value, and the singular point of the app, was so clear from the beginning. For this particular project, it also felt important to communicate form and function in parallel: just as the Conversation Cards themselves cut right to the chase, the app does, too.

Conversation Starters earned #1 ranking in its category and debuted as a top 10 paid apps in iTunes.

Lindsey does apps with GRACE. We are so grateful for both her team's code chops and her working style. Our Conversation Starters app feels like a little hot rod -- strong engine, clean lines, great look. And along the way to building something really solid for us, Lindsey hit every deadline, educated us, and was a total sweetheart to collaborate with.
